Fitted Home Offices in Hammersmith
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted home offices in Hammersmith starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- Working at the kitchen table
- Cables trailing across the desk and floor
- Flimsy shelves that will not take the weight

From workshop to your room
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so home offices are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- It starts with a short note from you about the space.
- We visit to measure the room and the way in, and discuss the design.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- The desk and shelving are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Preparing the room
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Fitted home offices in Hammersmith
Planning the cables early is what keeps a home office tidy. Cable holes and routes are built into the desk and cupboards. Any new sockets are fitted by your electrician, with the furniture designed to suit. Talking it through during the design visit in Hammersmith saves trouble later. We make home offices from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are a laptop that moves from room to room and shelving that bows under the load.
A large share of the homes around Hammersmith were built before 1919, and Victorian and Edwardian rooms usually have a chimney breast with an alcove each side. A desk can sit in an alcove, with shelving above and a cupboard below, which keeps work in its own corner of the room. Walls are rarely straight in older houses, so the desk and shelves are scribed to fit.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.
When you need someone else
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:
- Knocking through or opening up rooms
- New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician
- Building a loft conversion, which is not our work

Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
For the painted parts of a home office, moisture-resistant MDF is a sound choice. It stays stable and gives a smooth base for paint. It works with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Pull-out drawers
A set of drawers can sit under one end of the desk. The middle stays open for your knees and chair. The design visit settles the layout.
Fitted home offices for homes in Hammersmith
In the streets around Hammersmith, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 68%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 9%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. Hammersmith is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 32% of households in the area around Hammersmith, according to Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.
The wider area includes historic houses like Kelmscott House, about 0.5 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. Near listed buildings like Convent and School of the Sacred Heart, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Hammersmith, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Brook Green, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.
Hammersmith is within the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, about 2 miles south-east of Fulham. Anywhere in Hammersmith, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our Hammersmith and Fulham coverage includes Hammersmith, along with the rest of the borough.

FAQs: fitted home offices in Hammersmith
My house in Hammersmith is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Does a conservation area in or near Hammersmith affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Where is the furniture made?
Each piece is made in our workshop for the room it is going into, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Do you wire in sockets for the home office?
Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, not us. The desk is planned with routes for cables and space for any sockets. It is useful to agree the positions during the design visit.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
For a plain desk on a flat wall, a ready-made option can do the job. Bespoke work makes sense in an alcove, under a slope, or where you want the desk, shelves and storage to work together. At the design visit, we will tell you honestly which approach suits your room. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.
