Window seats in Hammersmith

Window seats for homes in Hammersmith

In many period houses, a bay window is the obvious place for a seat. Bays have angled sides, and their walls are seldom square or flat. Each side is measured and the seat is scribed to fit, so it sits neatly in the bay without gaps. It is the kind of space where a ready-made bench never quite fits. We make window seats from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are wanting a seat without blocking the radiator and wanting a quiet place to read.

A solid brick outside wall in an older house can be cold and sometimes damp, so storage against it is designed with ventilation behind. That matters around Hammersmith, where a large share of the homes are that old. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

How fitting day works

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. It starts when you contact us with a few details about the window, including any radiator under it.
  2. We visit to measure the window and go through the design. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out, for you to look over.
  4. The seat is made in our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
  5. The seat is fitted in your home and checked so the lids and drawers run well.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it during the design visit.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

FAQs: window seats in Hammersmith

Does a conservation area in or near Hammersmith affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hammersmith?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you build a window seat over a radiator?

Yes. We build a grille or an open front into the seat so the heat is not trapped. We also leave space around the radiator. Moving the radiator is for your plumber, if you’d prefer it elsewhere.

Is the cushion included with the window seat?

No, we make the seat itself, and the cushion is something you source separately. We will give you the exact size so it fits well. It leaves you to choose the fabric.

Is a lid or drawers better for a window seat?

It depends on what you will store and how often you’ll reach for it. A lid gives access to the whole space, good for blankets and occasional things, while drawers are easier with a cushion on top.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What we do not do

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:

  • Seat cushions, which you source separately
  • Plumbing work on the radiator under the window
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator

Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Fitted storage in Hammersmith

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hammersmith were built before 1919 (about 68%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 9%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 64 entries within half a mile of the centre of Hammersmith. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If you live on or close to a main road in Hammersmith, let us know at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If you live near Brook Green, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place. The wider area includes historic houses such as Kelmscott House, about 0.5 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Convent and School of the Sacred Heart, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What affects the cost of window seats

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Spray painting or hand painting

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

What we need to know

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • How you want to use the space

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Is bespoke worth it?

One advantage of a standalone bench is that it can go with you. A fitted seat is designed to stay, and it uses the space in a way a standalone piece cannot. Which suits you depends on your plans. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
