Flats, blocks and rented homes
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route during the design visit.
About our TV and media units in Heston
Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. The wall is planned as a whole, rather than a stand with wires trailing behind it. If you’re planning a TV unit in Heston, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about boxes and consoles on the floor and speakers muffled behind doors.
A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Heston, so it’s a layout worth planning for. We tend to plan TV and media units along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

How fitting day works
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
- At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
- A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
- We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.
Before fitting day
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

Questions we’re often asked
Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Heston?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you make TV and media units for a home in Heston?
Yes, we work across Hounslow, Heston included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.
Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?
We don’t do electrical work. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician. We share the layout so the sockets line up with the design.
What happens when you come to measure?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
What if I buy a larger TV?
We can size the opening for the screen you might buy next. Tell us the size you have in mind so the space and cable routes suit it.
Living-room carpentry in Heston: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Heston were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 44%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 33%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 5 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Heston. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Heston. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.
Near listed buildings like Church of St Leonard, less than half a mile east of the centre of Heston, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. The wider area includes historic houses such as Osterley House, about 1.2 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.
Heston is part of the London Borough of Hounslow, about 2 miles south-east of Hounslow. Homes in Heston are part of the area we cover for TV and media units. Across Hounslow, we cover Heston, along with the rest of the borough.
In TW5, UB2 and TW3, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Fern Lane, Sutton Road and Eton Avenue, for TV and media units and any of our other fitted furniture. For rail, the closest station is Southall station, about 1.4 miles north of the centre. Nearby you will also find Hounslow Hospital (1.2 miles south) and Treaty Centre (1.3 miles south-east). For a walk, there’s Garden Lake.
Do you need TV and media units in Heston?
A new, larger TV often prompts it. The old stand no longer suits it, or the screen takes over the room. Shelves and cupboards around the screen make it sit better in the room.
Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:
- A TV that looks out of place in the room
- A cabinet that traps heat
- Somewhere to keep games tidy
- Standard units leaving gaps
For a flat near Southall station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Choosing a carpenter
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
Practical tips
The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:
- Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
- Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
- Think about the viewing height from your sofa
Once your equipment is in, check that it is not running hot. Don’t block the gaps and openings left for air with cables or clutter.
Heavy equipment is best kept low.
