Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF for many doors and carcasses, so it suits painted cupboards. It copes well in utility rooms and on cooler external walls.

Shelves

Shelves are spaced to suit what goes on them, from towels and bedding to tins and boxes. Wide shelves are made stiff enough not to sag.

Fitted cupboards in Oval: what you get

Utility rooms and boot rooms need storage that copes with everyday wear. Tall cupboards can take the vacuum cleaner, ironing board and cleaning things, with housing for a washing machine or tumble dryer where you want it. Your plumber connects the appliances and your electrician handles any sockets, so we plan the cupboards around their work. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are tidying away the gas and electricity meters and a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear.

In a block, the lift, the corridors and the door to the flat set the size of each section. Most households around Oval live in purpose-built flats, so the sections for fitted cupboards are planned at the design visit. Floors in the corridor and the flat are covered on the way in.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Many blocks have entry systems, concierge desks or rules on booking the lift, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Communal areas and floors are protected on the way in.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store, including anything awkward like a boiler or meter.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room.

How to prepare

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Does a conservation area in or near Oval affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

I live in a flat in Oval. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?

Yes, it is something we deal with all the time. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so we scribe and level every cupboard.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

What happens at the design visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Storage in Oval homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Oval were built since 2000 (about 32%) and before 1919 (about 26%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 131 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Oval. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Purpose-built flats are more common around Oval than across Lambeth: about 69% of households, against about 52%, according to Census 2021. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.

If your children go to St Stephen's Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mark, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Is it time for fitted cupboards?

Many flats come with little or no built-in storage. A tall cupboard in a hallway or a recess can make a real difference, especially when it uses the full height of the room.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A utility room with proper storage
  • Cupboards that suit a period house
  • Tall cupboards where space is short
  • A linen cupboard on the landing

If you live in a flat close to Vauxhall station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

How to choose a carpenter in London

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Neither choice is right for every home. In a simple space, off-the-shelf can be enough. For tricky spaces, period rooms or a built-in look, a fitted cupboard tends to earn its place. Flats tend to have walls interrupted by doors, radiators and sockets, and standard widths rarely fit between them. Fitted furniture is made for the spaces that are left.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Caring for painted furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:

  • Point out anything that needs access
  • Think about how the cupboards will get in
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Make sure walls are dry before we fit

Over time, you may want to move a shelf or add a rail. Where we’ve fitted adjustable shelves, you can move them as needed, so the space keeps working.

At the design visit, let us know how parking and access work. Much of London has controlled parking and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.
