Walk-in wardrobes in Seven Sisters

Drawers, shelves and shoe storage make a walk-in wardrobe work day to day. Shelves suit folded clothes and bags, while drawers hold smaller things and shoes get shelving of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there is space. If you are living with moving wardrobes out of the bedroom and turning a box room into a dressing room, that is what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A large share of the homes around Seven Sisters were built before 1919, and bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast with an alcove either side. Fitted storage can sit in the alcoves or span the wall, chimney breast and all. Because older floors slope and walls bow, everything is scribed and levelled on site.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. First, you tell us about the space and how you dress.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and talk through hanging, shelves and drawers, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. Everything is made and finished in our workshop.
  5. The units are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, message us from the contact page. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

What prompts walk-in wardrobes in Seven Sisters

Others want to clear the bedroom of wardrobes. Moving clothes into a separate space leaves the bedroom simpler and quieter to look at.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom
  • Separate space for two people’s clothes
  • A dressing table with drawers and a mirror
  • Somewhere for shoes to live

For a family home near Earlsmead Primary School, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

What to check before you book

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Tips worth knowing

These points come up often when people plan walk-in wardrobes. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Wipe painted surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
  • Think about whether you want doors
  • Plan shoe storage around what you own
  • Count your coats and long garments

Adjustable shelves can be moved as your clothes change, so the space keeps working. It’s worth a rethink each season.

If the room is on an external wall, have any damp sorted first. Cooler external walls can lead to condensation, so we allow for ventilation.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Seven Sisters

Is parking a problem for fitting in Seven Sisters?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Can you fit walk-in wardrobes to the uneven walls of an older house in Seven Sisters?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.
