How we make fitted cupboards for Millbank

Boxing in a boiler is a job that needs care. The boiler maker’s instructions set out the clearances and ventilation it needs, and the cupboard is built to respect them. We make sure the doors open fully so the boiler can be serviced, while any work on the boiler is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about a cupboard for a recess or odd corner and a linen cupboard on the landing.

Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. With a large share of the homes around Millbank built before 1919, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house, and painted to match. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Questions we are often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Millbank?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit fitted cupboards to the uneven walls of an older house in Millbank?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.

What are the cupboards made of?

MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for shelves and drawer boxes. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in the colour agreed with you.

What do fitted cupboards cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 412 entries within half a mile of the centre of Millbank. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. A quarter or more of the homes in the area around Millbank (about 25%) were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Homes built since 2000 rarely have much storage, and they tend to have stud walls, so fitted cupboards are designed with fixings to suit.

If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. What affects the price in Millbank

Several things affect the price:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The width and height of the space
  • Parking near your home
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll typically ask about:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, use our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Tell us about parking at the measuring visit
  • Tell us about meters and boilers in the space
  • Think about what each cupboard will hold
  • Deal with any damp walls first

Meter and fuse board cupboards work best when they stay easy to open. Avoid packing things in front of the meters, so they can be reached without a struggle.

Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board in the space early. They affect where doors, panels and vents go, and planning around them is much easier than changing things later.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space.
  2. At the design visit we plan the cupboards and check how the sections will get in.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the cupboards in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring the sections in and fit them, scribed to the walls. The finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Getting a quote

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made units are made in fixed sizes, and the space around them is often wasted. A fitted cupboard can run wall to wall and floor to ceiling, which can add a good deal of storage. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
