Loft storage for homes in St Luke's

Sloping ceilings make standard wardrobes hard to fit. A wardrobe made for the slope follows its angle, with hanging where there’s height and shelves or drawers lower down. It makes the most of the room’s height. We’ll plan it at the design visit in St Luke's. We make eaves cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a converted loft with no fitted furniture and a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe.

Newer homes often have plain spaces left as they are: a recess beside the stairs, a gap by a window, an empty cupboard. Around St Luke's, many homes were built since 2000, so spaces like that are worth a second look. The layout inside is planned to use the full depth.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Doors and drawer fronts

Any door that gives access behind the knee wall can look like the others. It opens fully, so the space behind can still be reached. The other fronts can be doors, drawers or both.

Pull-out drawers

Drawers in the knee wall let you use the deep, low space without crawling in. Each one is sized for what it will hold. They suit clothes, bedding and boxes.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it during the design visit.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Loft storage for homes in St Luke's

About 37% of the homes in the neighbourhood around St Luke's went up since 2000, and about 28% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List has 263 entries within half a mile of the centre of St Luke's. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning, particularly for larger pieces.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Wesley's Chapel, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. For an older house near Jewin Welsh Presbyterian Chapel, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using. Mansion House, about 0.8 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.

St Luke's is about 2 miles north of Highbury, in the London Borough of Islington. Anywhere in St Luke's, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. We cover places right across Islington, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

In N1, EC1V and EC2A, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We cover homes on streets such as Long Lane, City Road and Moor Lane, whether you want loft storage or another piece made for the room. The A1 and A501 runs close to St Luke's, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. If you are just outside St Luke's, we also cover Finsbury (1 mile south), Barbican Estate (1 mile south), Shoreditch (1 mile east), Hoxton (1 mile north-east) and City of London (1 mile south). Elsewhere in Islington, we also cover Highbury (2 miles north), Barnsbury (2 miles north-west), Holloway (2 miles north-west), Mildmay (2 miles north), Upper Holloway (3 miles north-west) and Nag's Head (2 miles north-west). As one of the bigger places in Islington, St Luke's is covered for loft storage and everything else we make.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you only need a few boxes in a boarded loft, standalone shelving may be enough. Bespoke work makes sense in a converted loft room, where the storage is part of the room. We will give you an honest view during the design visit. Ready-made units fixed to stud walls are often held by fixings that don’t suit the board. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board.

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Why us?

  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Read our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf or how to compare quotes.

What we don’t do

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Electrical work in the loft
  • Loft conversions, which we do not carry out
  • Structural changes, like cutting into rafters or joists

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so it helps to sort them out ahead of time. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. You get in touch and describe the loft room, its slopes and any dormer.
  2. At the design visit we measure the knee walls and the angle of each slope at more than one point, as they’re rarely even.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Your questions about loft storage in St Luke's

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in St Luke's?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

How do you fit loft storage in a flat in St Luke's?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

What are your eaves cupboards made from?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Do you carry out loft conversions?

No. We don’t carry out loft conversions. Our part is the storage once the loft is a finished room, from eaves cupboards to wardrobes under the slopes.
