How it is made
Larder and dresser units
A larder gives tall storage for food and small appliances, sized to what you store.
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribing is how cabinets meet a wall that isn’t flat, closing any gaps.
Bespoke kitchens for homes in Stamford Hill
Many people want a tall larder for food, tins and small appliances. A larder can have shelves, deep drawers and racks, planned around what you store. Built into an alcove or the end of a wall, it puts tricky space to work. We make kitchens from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are cabinets for a narrow kitchen and a dresser that suits a period house.
Around Stamford Hill, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in many Victorian and Edwardian terraces the kitchen sits in a narrow back addition, or in a side return that has since been extended. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so cabinets are scribed and levelled on site. You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and the cabinets are made around them.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Stamford Hill
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Stamford Hill were built before 1919 (about 52%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 19%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Stamford Hill, 10 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Around Stamford Hill, about 52% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Hackney as a whole, about 35%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Andrew, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. Living in a block of flats near Stamford Hill station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Andrew, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Questions we are often asked
Do you cover homes near Stamford Hill station?
Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Stamford Hill?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on, so check it or ask your managing agent.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?
Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than ordering from a range. What you get is a kitchen planned around how you cook and live. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

What affects the cost of bespoke kitchens
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- How big the furniture is
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.
Getting in touch
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Examples of the look you are after
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Your postcode and the borough
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.
How fitting day works
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
- At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout. We note where the water, gas and sockets are now.
- We send a quote in writing setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
- We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician. We don’t arrange these trades ourselves.
Before fitting day
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
