How we make fitted cupboards for Hyde Park Estate

The carcasses and doors are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, depending on what each part needs to do. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves and drawer boxes. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about using the full height of a room and space for laundry, cleaning things and boots.

With most households around Hyde Park Estate in purpose-built flats, mansion blocks and modern developments are both possible. Mansion block flats often have long hallways, bays and high ceilings that suit fitted storage, while modern flats often have short halls and service boxing to work around. In a maisonette, the space under the internal stairs is worth using.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the fitted cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Practical tips

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Point out anything that needs access
  • Make a note of what needs a home

Your needs may change once the cupboards are in use. Where we have fitted adjustable shelves, you can move them as needed as your storage changes.

If there’s damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. Damp behind a cupboard can lead to mould, and external walls can be colder than internal ones. Ventilation inside the cupboard helps too.

How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all, which the design allows for.

  1. You get in touch and tell us whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Starting with a design visit

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Related advice

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

How it is made

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing is how a cupboard meets a wall that is not flat for a close fit.

Spray-painted finish

With a spray finish, the painting is done in the workshop, so there’s less to do on site.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is Hyde Park Estate in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes, Hyde Park Estate is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Westminster and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and make sure an engineer can reach it.

Where other trades come in

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Moving or servicing a boiler
  • Relocating meters or the fuse board
  • Connecting appliances to water or waste

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.

Hyde Park Estate homes and fitted cupboards

In the area around Hyde Park Estate, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 42%) and the years since 2000 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List has 297 entries within half a mile of the centre of Hyde Park Estate. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. About 77% of households in the neighbourhood around Hyde Park Estate live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For a family home near Hampden Gurney CofE Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. The wider area includes historic houses like Handel Hendrix House, about 1 mile east. For a period home anywhere nearby, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. If you live in a period home close to Church of St John the Evangelist, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size.
