Made-to-measure kitchens in West Kensington
About 68% of the homes in the streets around West Kensington went up before 1919, and about 11% between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of West Kensington, 12 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. In West Kensington, a van will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.
If you live in a period home close to St Cuthbert's, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. If you live in a flat close to Kensington Olympia station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
West Kensington is part of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, about 1 mile south of Fulham. We cover West Kensington as part of our work across Hammersmith and Fulham. We cover places right across Hammersmith and Fulham, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.
Design visits and fitting in W14, SW6 and SW5 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If your home is on a street like Sun Road, Star Road and Field Road, or close by, we can visit to measure up for bespoke kitchens. If you’re just outside West Kensington, we also cover North End (1 mile west), Brook Green (1 mile north-west), Fulham (1 mile south), Hammersmith (1 mile west) and Brackenbury Village (1 mile north-west). Across the rest of Hammersmith and Fulham, our area takes in Chelsea Harbour (2 miles south-east), Sands End (2 miles south-east), White City (2 miles north-west), College Park (3 miles north-west) and Old Oak Common (3 miles north-west).

Bespoke kitchens for homes in West Kensington
We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets, while other trades handle the services. Your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we plan the cabinets around where their work goes. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers and a kitchen planned around your appliances.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around West Kensington, many kitchens still have a chimney breast, which can be built around rather than fought. Any capped chimney should stay ventilated, and damp is dealt with before anything is fitted. Other trades handle the plumbing, gas and electrics.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

From workshop to your room
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in West Kensington
My house in West Kensington is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Is West Kensington in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?
Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London, and West Kensington is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
How much does a bespoke kitchen cost?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, layout and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on leases, so please check yours.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch.

What else we make in West Kensington
How it’s made
Larder and dresser units
A larder gives tall storage for food and small appliances, sized to what you store.
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribing is how cabinets meet a wall that is not flat, closing any gaps.
Caring for painted furniture
New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:
- List what needs a home in the kitchen
- Share the layout with your other trades
- Know your appliance sizes early
- Deal with damp walls first
Hand-painted kitchens are easy to touch up. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that wipes clean. Keep a note of the paint colours.
It is useful to know which appliances you want early. We size the spaces around them, so late changes can be tricky.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Ready-made cabinets often have chipboard carcasses. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in colours you choose, so the finish can be repainted later. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
