Fitted wardrobes in Shepherd's Bush

About our fitted wardrobes in Shepherd's Bush

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls to help avoid condensation and mould. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. If you are living with wardrobes that are full to bursting and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

With a large share of homes around Shepherd's Bush built before 1919, many bedrooms sit against solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for fitted wardrobes.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

How we price fitted wardrobes

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • How square the room is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The width and height of the space

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Questions from Shepherd's Bush

Is Shepherd's Bush in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes, we work across Hammersmith and Fulham, Shepherd's Bush included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in Shepherd's Bush?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Fitted wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

How long will the fitting take?

The time on site depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form.

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

The space in front of the wardrobe normally decides it. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We look at it with you when we measure.

What fitted wardrobes cannot fix

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
  • Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can use our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in Shepherd's Bush

Couples often want storage that works for two. We can plan separate sections for each person.

Fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • Too little room for clothes
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St John the Baptist, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

How to prepare

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Shepherd's Bush

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Shepherd's Bush were built before 1919 (about 67%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Shepherd's Bush is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Purpose-built flats are home to about 46% of households in the area around Shepherd's Bush, according to Census 2021. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For a flat near Shepherds Bush station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is one of the older houses near Shepherd's Bush Tabernacle, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
