Fitted wardrobes in Catford

Doors can be hinged or sliding. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. We weigh them up with you at the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are several odd pieces where one run of storage would do and clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms.

In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, and a large share of the homes around Catford are that old. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

What it is made from

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat covers edges, corners and panels evenly and leaves no brush marks. You choose the colour before we start.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the wardrobes are fitted. It is easy to touch up later.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes are cheaper to buy and easy to take with you. That’s a real advantage if you are renting or moving soon. Built-in wardrobes become part of the house. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Catford

In the streets around Catford, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 68%) and the years since 2000 (about 14%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Catford include Church of St Andrew (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles east, and Church of St Laurence and Community Centre (Grade II), under half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 26% of households in the neighbourhood around Catford, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Laurence and Community Centre, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. For families living near Holy Cross Catholic Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. For a flat near Catford Bridge station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Catford

My home in Catford is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Catford?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Do you work in Catford?

Yes, we do. We design and make fitted wardrobes for homes in Catford.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, message us from the contact page.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You tell us about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
  4. Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Empty the space we will be working in

How to get a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Advice

Flats, leases and landlords

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
