Fitted wardrobes designed for your room

How we make fitted wardrobes for Bellingham

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. Others work around a window, sometimes with a dressing table or a window seat between them. The layout is planned so the room doesn’t feel boxed in. If your home has a bedroom that never feels tidy and clothes with nowhere proper to go, fitted wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, which makes it simple to take fitted furniture up to the ceiling. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around Bellingham, high cupboards make a good home for suitcases and spare bedding. Skirting boards are cut around neatly.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

When is bespoke worth it?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

What it costs

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The width and height of the space
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Helping us understand the room

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

To get a quote, use our contact form and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Bellingham

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Bellingham were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 55%) and before 1919 (about 18%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Bellingham, Historic England’s list includes The Fellowship Inn Public House (Grade II), under half a mile north-east. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. That typically means a van in Bellingham needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Parking is worth mentioning during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

If you live in a period home close to St Dunstan, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. If you live in a flat close to Bellingham station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Kingswood House, about 2.5 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

How it’s made

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.

Moisture-resistant MDF

With no grain to show through, MDF gives a calm painted finish. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted wardrobes.

Flats, leases and landlords

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through.

Questions we are often asked

Do you cover homes near Bellingham station?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Bellingham?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. It’s planned so there is room around the bed and the room does not feel enclosed.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?

Each wardrobe is built in sections that suit the stairs, landings and lift. Tell us if your block has lift or concierge booking rules.
