Hoxton Fitted Wardrobes

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Hoxton starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • Too little room for clothes
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors

Fitted wardrobes in Hoxton

Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We plan for the people using it too. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about dusty space on top of the wardrobe and bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes.

A large number of homes around Hoxton date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats with compact bedrooms. In a compact bedroom, fitted furniture that reaches the ceiling and uses the corners makes the most difference. Boxed-in pipes and service risers can be built around, so nothing is wasted.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the fitted wardrobe designed for your room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind, and we arrange a design visit.
  2. We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish, so you can see what’s included.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Starting with a design visit

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Advice

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes come in standard heights and widths, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls. Standalone furniture fixed to plasterboard needs the right fixings, and often doesn’t get them. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board, and heavy pieces can stand on the floor.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

With hand painting, you see the colour in your own room’s light before the final coat. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.

Birch plywood

Drawers get heavy use, so we often make the boxes from birch plywood.

Tips worth knowing

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block

Leave a little space between clothes and the back of the wardrobe where the wardrobe sits on an outside wall. A little airflow helps keep damp at bay.

Close doors gently and do not let them swing into furniture. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Hoxton

Homes built since 2000 make up about 36% of the housing in the area around Hoxton, with about 26% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hoxton include Church of St Columba (Grade I), under half a mile east, and St Columba's Vicarage (Grade I), under half a mile east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 36% of homes in the streets around Hoxton were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board.

Close to Shoreditch Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If you live in a flat close to Hoxton station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. For a family home near Shoreditch Park Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Hoxton is about 1 mile south-east of Shoreditch, in the London Borough of Hackney. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Hoxton is part of that. Hoxton is one of the places in Hackney where we make fitted wardrobes.

Every home in N1, N1P and EC1V is within our area for fitted wardrobes. If your home is on a street such as City Road, Noel Road and East Road, or close by, we can visit to measure up for fitted wardrobes. Hoxton sits close to the A1200 and A1208, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. Other places close to Hoxton include Haggerston (1 mile east), Shoreditch (1 mile south-east), Canonbury (1 mile north), De Beauvoir Town (1 mile north) and St Luke's (1 mile south-west). Other parts of Hackney we cover include Homerton (2 miles north-east), West Hackney (2 miles north), Hackney (2 miles north-east), Lower Clapton (2 miles north-east), Stoke Newington (2 miles north) and Clapton (2 miles north-east). Being one of the larger places in Hackney, Hoxton is covered for fitted wardrobes and everything else we make.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Hoxton

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Hoxton?

Yes, we work across Hackney, Hoxton included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Hoxton affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How do I get started?

Just drop us a line using the contact form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design.

Is it possible to have storage over the bed?

Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.
