Fitted wardrobes for your home in Shadwell

Fitted wardrobes in Shadwell: what you get

Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in a colour agreed with you. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Typical reasons to get in touch are dusty space on top of the wardrobe and clothes with nowhere proper to go; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Most homes around Shadwell are purpose-built flats, whether in mansion blocks or newer developments. In a mansion block, bedrooms often keep their chimney breasts and tall ceilings, while modern flats tend to have plasterboard partitions. Either way, fitted wardrobes are fixed to suit the wall.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Before and after fitting day

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Tell us which walls face outside
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them instead of crowding one section. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail.

Close doors gently and do not let them swing into furniture. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

Shadwell homes and fitted wardrobes

In the neighbourhood around Shadwell, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 35%) and the years since 2000 (about 28%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The centre of Shadwell is within about a quarter of a mile of the Wapping Wall Conservation Area. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. For fitting in Shadwell, a van normally needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Parking is worth mentioning at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

If you live in a period home close to St Paul's Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For families living near Peter Hills with St Mary's and St Paul's CofE Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Living in a block of flats near Wapping station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Shadwell is part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, about 1 mile north-west of Whitechapel. Anywhere in Shadwell, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. We list Shadwell among 31 places we cover in Tower Hamlets.

We make fitted wardrobes across the SE16, E1 and E1W postcode area for fitted wardrobes. Streets in the area include Swan Road, Thame Road and Brunel Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for fitted wardrobes. Shadwell sits close to the A101 and A126. What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it’s sized to be manageable. The stair turns and landings set the limit. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the doors and the inside with you.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

How to prepare

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Advice

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Shadwell

Is parking a problem for fitting in Shadwell?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

I live in a flat in Shadwell. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

Uneven floors are normal in older homes. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How do I get a quote?

It’s easiest to message us from the contact page and let us know about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

What happens at the design visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

What it is made from

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish often suits wardrobes in older houses. You choose the colour, and touch-ups are simple.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. This closes the gaps a straight wardrobe would leave in an older room.

Flats, leases and landlords

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
