Fitted wardrobes for homes in St George in the East

Fitted wardrobes are built to the room, from the floor to the ceiling and from wall to wall. There’s no dusty gap on top and no tricky space at the ends. For a bedroom in St George in the East, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and space under the eaves going to waste.

Many homes around St George in the East have been built since 2000, and in newer homes, bedrooms tend to be compact, with plasterboard stud walls. Heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor, rather than relying on the board alone. Any built-in cupboard that came with the home can be replaced or extended to match.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

How fitting day works

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so it helps to sort them out beforehand. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Advice

Flats, blocks and rented homes

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. It is easy to touch up later, and it works well in a period bedroom.

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawer fronts can sit behind the doors or on the outside, depending on the look you prefer. Inside drawers keep the front simple.

What we do not do

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • Building work to create a loft room
  • Electrical work, such as moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Bedrooms in St George in the East: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around St George in the East were built since 2000 (about 37%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 29%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 120 entries within half a mile of the centre of St George in the East. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and fitted wardrobes can be designed to work around them. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. That usually means a van in St George in the East needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Parking is worth mentioning during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Mansion House, about 1.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If you live near William Curtis Ecological Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. For a family home near St Paul's Whitechapel Church of England Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

What it costs

What you pay depends on:

  • How square the room is
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in St George in the East?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

I live near Shadwell station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, in moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns awkward space into storage.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
