From workshop to your room

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it helps to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. We start with how you use the kitchen and what is not working.
  2. We visit, measure the walls, floor and ceiling, and go through the design.
  3. You get a written quote for the cabinets, with the materials and finish set out.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made at our workshop.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.

Starting with a design visit

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

About our bespoke kitchens in East Ham

An island can be a good addition where there’s space for one. There needs to be enough clear floor around it to open doors and move about, because a cramped island makes a kitchen harder to work in. Where space is tight, a peninsula or a longer run may suit better. People typically come to us about room for everything in the kitchen and a painted dresser for the kitchen; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a house built before 1919, a wall that looks solid may be lath and plaster. With a large share of the homes around East Ham dating from then, each wall is checked before deciding where heavy cabinets go. Where a wall won’t carry the weight, open shelves or tall floor-standing cupboards can take over.

We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing is how cabinets meet a wall that is not flat, closing any gaps.

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF for many kitchen doors and panels, because it copes with a room that gets warm and steamy.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Neither choice is right for every home. In a simple modern kitchen, off-the-shelf can be enough. For period homes, awkward rooms or a painted look, bespoke tends to earn its place. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in East Ham

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Barking station?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in East Ham?

Yes, we work across Newham, East Ham included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease, so check it or ask your managing agent.

Which worktops and appliances can I have?

The cabinets are designed for the worktop, sink and appliances you’ve picked. Knowing their sizes early helps, and the quote confirms what’s included.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it is useful to be around at the end.

What it costs

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The internal fittings
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

What we need to know

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
