Islington Fitted Wardrobes

We make fitted wardrobes for homes in Islington, designed around the room you have. Your fitted wardrobe is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes

Practical tips

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Empty the area where we will be working
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have

Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that is barely damp. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, as they can dull the paint.

Keep any ventilation gaps clear, especially where the wardrobe meets an outside wall. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and deal with any damp early.

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. We weigh them up with you during the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes.

Around Islington, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted storage can sit in the alcoves or span the wall, chimney breast and all. Because older floors slope and walls bow, everything is scribed and levelled on site.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Islington?

Sharing a bedroom means sharing the wardrobe. We can plan separate sections for each person, each with its own mix of hanging, shelves and drawers.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom

The wider area includes historic houses like Dr Johnson's House, about 1.6 miles south. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

What to check before you book

  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Islington

About 49% of the homes in the streets around Islington went up before 1919, and about 16% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Islington, Historic England’s list includes Union Chapel (Grade I), less than half a mile north, and Canonbury Tower (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north-east. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. In Islington, a van will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Tell us what parking is near you during the design visit.

Close to Barnard Park? Fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Islington is part of the London Borough of Islington, about 1 mile north of Highbury. We design and make fitted wardrobes for homes in Islington, as part of our work in every London borough. We cover places right across the rest of London, large and small.

Every home in N1, N7, NW1 and EC1V is within our area for fitted wardrobes, from the main roads to the quieter streets. You’ll find streets here such as Gibson Square, Old Royal Free Square and Cloudesley Square, and homes on each of them are within our area for fitted wardrobes. Main roads around Islington include the B515 and A5203. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. We also cover Pentonville (1 mile south), Angel (1 mile south), Barnsbury (1 mile north-west), Clerkenwell (1 mile south) and Lower Holloway (1 mile north-west).

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

To be fair, modular wardrobe systems are easy to reconfigure. A bespoke interior is planned around what you own. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Fitting day, step by step

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so it is useful to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Ask for a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Questions we’re often asked

My home in Islington is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit fitted wardrobes to the uneven walls of an older house in Islington?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

It is worked out with you when we measure, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

When is bespoke worth it?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
