Fitted wardrobes in Islington: how it works

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls to help avoid condensation and mould. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. Typical reasons to get in touch are bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes and wardrobes that are full to bursting, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the bedroom, and we arrange a design visit.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the doors and the inside with you. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out, so you can see what’s included.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling.

Homes across Islington and their bedrooms

From Highbury, Farringdon and Clerkenwell to the quieter streets, bedrooms across Islington range from box rooms to large rooms with bays. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. Hanging, shelves and drawers inside are arranged around what you store.

The biggest shares of homes in Islington were built before 1919 (about 44%) and since 2000 (about 19%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 44% of homes in Islington were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Older bedrooms normally have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use, scribed to walls that are not straight. About 24% of households in Islington live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

In London, the route into a home matters as much as the room, so the way in is measured along with the room.

Highbury: For a flat near Canonbury station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Sutton House, about 2 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

What it costs

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Parking near your home
  • How square the room is
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Getting in touch

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • How you want to use the space
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

What prompts fitted wardrobes

For some, it’s about a calmer room. A single run of painted doors looks tidier than mixed furniture and keeps everything out of sight.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall

Could you do it yourself?

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail.

Keep any ventilation gaps clear. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and have the cause looked at early.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish often suits wardrobes in older houses. The colour is agreed with you.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so we use it for doors, end panels and the faces you see. It suits bedrooms where the wardrobe sits on an external wall.

Questions we are often asked

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with long hanging where there’s height and shelves or drawers where it’s lower. It turns tricky space into storage.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

We plan the sections around the route into your flat. Let us know about any concierge or lift booking rules.

What if my bedroom floor isn’t level?

Uneven floors are normal in older homes. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet and the doors line up.

What materials do you use?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes, and the quote says which is used where.

Do you cover Islington?

Yes. We cover Islington, as part of our work across all London boroughs. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.
