Highbury Fitted Wardrobes

Fitted wardrobes for your home in Highbury: floor-to-ceiling wardrobes built to the shape of your bedroom. Each piece is designed at a visit to your home, made in our workshop and fitted by us.

  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • Not enough hanging space

Need fitted wardrobes in Highbury?

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, so there’s normally a gap on top and at the ends. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Highbury

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are wasted space beside the chimney breast and a bedroom that never feels tidy.

In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, which matters around Highbury, as a large share of homes there date from before 1919. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

From workshop to your room

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn. Let us know about parking as well, as a van typically needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

How to prepare

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Starting with a design visit

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

What it’s made from

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth lifts the wardrobe and hides an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting is done in the workshop, which gives large doors a smooth, even surface. It works on plain and panelled doors alike.

Pricing fitted wardrobes in Highbury

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Parking near your home
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The overall size of the piece

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What we need to know

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

My home in Highbury is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Is Highbury in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes, we work across Islington, Highbury included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details.

Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns awkward space into storage.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

How do I get started?

It is easiest to fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Bedroom storage in Highbury

Homes built before 1919 make up about 50% of the housing in the area around Highbury, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of Highbury is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. In Highbury, a van will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Tell us what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Close to Highbury Fields? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 2 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If you live in a flat close to Canonbury station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Tips worth knowing

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • List the things that won’t hang, like jumpers and shoes
  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early

New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. At first, handle the doors with care and avoid knocking hangers against the inside.

Keep any ventilation gaps clear, especially where the wardrobe meets an outside wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and have the cause looked at early.
