Ivybridge Fitted Wardrobes
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Ivybridge starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- Too little room for clothes
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go
- An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
Fitted wardrobes for your home in Ivybridge
About our fitted wardrobes in Ivybridge
The inside matters as much as the doors. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so coats and dresses have room and shirts do not waste height. It helps to think about what you wear most before we meet. If your home has not enough hanging space and an awkward slope in a loft bedroom, fitted wardrobes made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
A good part of the housing around Ivybridge is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes come in standard heights and widths, so there is normally a gap on top and at the ends. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Decorating or plastering the room
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician

What happens on fitting day
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room.
- We come to measure and go through the design, including the doors and the finish.
- Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
- Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.
How to prepare
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Tell us about parking near your home

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Ivybridge
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Ivybridge?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Ivybridge?
Yes, we work across Hounslow, Ivybridge included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Should I send pictures?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. You can send them when you use our contact form.
Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?
It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing; sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once. We’ll help you weigh them up when we visit.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
Bedroom storage in Ivybridge
About 42% of the homes in the streets around Ivybridge went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 24% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Ivybridge include Church of All Hallows (Grade I), about 0.5 miles south-east, and Mogden House (Grade II), under half a mile north-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
The wider area includes historic houses like Richmond House, about 1.1 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Close to Inwood Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window. For a family home near Chase Bridge Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- How big the furniture is
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Parking near your home
Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.
Helping us understand the room
Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Approximate measurements of the space
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting lets you judge the colour in the room before the final coat. Scribed edges and joins are painted along with the rest.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying coats edges and corners evenly. The colour is agreed at the design stage.
