Common questions about fitted wardrobes
Does a conservation area in or near Hounslow West affect fitted furniture?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
I live near Hounslow station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
How do I get a quote for fitted wardrobes in Hounslow West?
It’s easiest to send us a few details through our contact form and let us know about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Is it possible to have storage over the bed?
Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. It is planned so there is room around the bed and the room does not feel enclosed.
How long does it take to fit wardrobes?
It depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The wardrobes are made at our workshop first before we come to fit them.
About our fitted wardrobes in Hounslow West
Fitted wardrobes are built to the room, from the floor to the ceiling and from wall to wall. There is no dusty gap on top and no awkward space at the ends. If you are planning fitted wardrobes in Hounslow West, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. Typical reasons to get in touch are condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Around Hounslow West, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so it’s a room shape worth planning for. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

From workshop to your room
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going, with floors protected throughout.
- You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
- We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
- A written quote follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
- Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.
Before fitting day
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
Getting a quote
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.
Advice
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.
Tips worth knowing
A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:
- Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
- List the things that won’t hang, such as jumpers and shoes
- Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block
- Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that’s barely damp. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays.
Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can because damp air ends up in the wardrobes. Opening a window now and then helps.

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hounslow West were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 33%) and since 2000 (about 19%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 14 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Hounslow West. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 33% of homes in the neighbourhood around Hounslow West date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Hounslow West
A move is a common trigger. Wardrobes from an old home rarely suit a new room. Built-in wardrobes are planned for the room you live in now.
Fitted wardrobes can help with:
- Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
- A room too narrow for hinged doors
- Wardrobes that are full to bursting
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
If you live in a period home close to Church of St Paul, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

What it is made from
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting is done in the workshop, giving a smooth, even surface on large doors. It works on plain and panelled doors alike.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the wardrobes are fitted. Small marks are simple to touch up.
