Fitted wardrobes for homes in North Wembley

Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We plan for the people using it too, keeping rails at a height they can reach. People usually come to us about space under the eaves going to waste and condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the housing around North Wembley, bedrooms usually have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. If the loft has been converted, sloping ceilings bring their own options.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

How it’s made

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat covers edges, corners and panels evenly and leaves no brush marks. The colour is agreed at the design stage.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so we use it for doors, end panels and the faces you see. It is a sensible choice against a colder external wall.

North Wembley homes and fitted wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around North Wembley were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 39%) and since 2000 (about 22%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of North Wembley include Church of St John (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east, and Wembley Fire Station (Grade II), less than half a mile south. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Brent are set locally. Depending on your street in North Wembley, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the measuring visit.

If you live near Preston Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. For a family home near Park Lane Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

A move is a common trigger. Wardrobes from an old home rarely suit a new room, or won’t go up the stairs at all. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom

The wider area includes historic houses such as Northolt Manor, about 2.9 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

What to check before you book

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Is bespoke worth it?

Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Fitted wardrobes arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Arranging a design visit

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Questions from North Wembley

Does a conservation area in or near North Wembley affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is North Wembley in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes, North Wembley is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Brent and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

How do I get a quote?

The first step is to fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It makes good use of space that is hard to furnish.
