How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You tell us about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We then make the wardrobes in our workshop, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

Preparing the room

  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

About our fitted wardrobes in Sudbury

Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about damp or musty clothes against an external wall and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use.

Around Sudbury, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the third bedroom is often small, sitting over the stairs. That’s where fitted wardrobes earn their place, making a small room work as a dressing room, a guest room or both. Nothing is assumed: the room is measured wall by wall.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

What it costs

Several things affect the price:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Parking near your home

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

Before the design visit

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.

Caring for painted furniture

Getting the most from fitted wardrobes starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls

New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, open and close the doors gently and don’t scrub the surfaces.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Questions we are often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Sudbury affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you cover homes near Sudbury & Harrow Road station?

Yes, homes across Brent and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions and fitted storage suits them well. The slope is measured at the measuring visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

The inside is planned around your clothes. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes, in the proportions you need. We talk it through at the design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard wardrobes cannot follow a slope. A fitted wardrobe can be shaped to the ceiling line. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, which shows up against standard furniture. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Bedrooms in Sudbury: local notes

About 53% of the homes in the area around Sudbury went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 12% between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of Sudbury is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. Where a home in Sudbury is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

For a flat near Sudbury & Harrow Road station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Near listed buildings like Sudbury Town Underground Station, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Sudbury, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For an older house near Church of St Andrew, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
