Fitted wardrobes in Oakwood

Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. It turns an tricky corner into storage. Typical reasons to get in touch are not enough hanging space and a bedroom that never feels tidy, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. Around Oakwood, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. We work in lofts that are already converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Is bespoke worth it?

Modular interior systems can be rearranged easily, and that flexibility is useful. A bespoke interior is planned around what you own. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote.

Fitting day, step by step

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the bedroom, and we arrange a design visit.
  2. We visit to measure the room and discuss the design. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements.
  5. We fit them in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Getting a quote

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Could you do it yourself?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Oakwood

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 44% of the housing in the streets around Oakwood, with about 22% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Oakwood is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Enfield included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Oakwood. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.

For a flat near Winchmore Hill station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If you live in a period home close to St Thomas's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Oakwood

An tricky room is another reason. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.

People typically get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall

If your children go to Wolfson Hillel Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Yes, we work across Enfield, Oakwood included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.
