Fitted wardrobes in Lewisham

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Lewisham starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

How we make fitted wardrobes for Lewisham

Doors can be hinged or sliding. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. We weigh them up with you at the measuring visit. If you are living with condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and a bedroom that never feels tidy, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Homes in an area like Lewisham can come from many different periods, so a bedroom could have solid brick walls, lath and plaster, blockwork or plasterboard. Each wall is checked at the design visit before fixings are chosen. With a chimney breast, the alcoves are the obvious place; without one, a full wall normally is.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the fitted wardrobe designed for your room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

Questions from Lewisham

I live in a flat in Lewisham. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Lewisham?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.

What happens at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Lewisham

Homes built before 1919 make up about 37% of the housing in the streets around Lewisham, with about 32% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Mercia Grove Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Lewisham. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. A van working in Lewisham will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Tell us what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like St Mary's Vicarage, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Lewisham station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Because the doors are sprayed before fitting, they arrive already finished. Give the paint time to cure fully.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Wardrobe doors are large, so stability matters. MDF gives a flat, smooth surface that paints well, whether the doors are plain or panelled.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

Others simply want the room to feel calmer. A single run of painted doors looks tidier than mixed furniture and keeps everything out of sight.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes

For a family home near St Saviour's Catholic Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

What to check before you book

  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the design visit.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so tell us what applies at the measuring visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind, and we arrange a design visit.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the design.
  3. We send a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
  5. We fit them in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

How to get a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Could you do it yourself?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.
