Fitted wardrobes in Putney Vale: what you get

Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, keeping long hanging where there’s height and drawers or shelves lower down. Space that is hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. People usually come to us about musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall and bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

A bedroom in a 1950s or 1960s home is normally a straightforward rectangle, often with the window on the outside wall and the door near a corner. Many homes around Putney Vale date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, so fitted furniture can often take a whole wall without tricky cuts. We plan the space in front first, so everything opens fully.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Fitting day, step by step

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drilling into concrete is noisier than into brick or plaster, so if neighbours are close, a note before fitting day can help. Fitting day is planned around any building rules on noisy work. Dust is kept down and cleared as we go.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the doors and the inside with you. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out, so you can see what’s included.
  4. The wardrobes are made at our workshop.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers.

Preparing the room

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Advice

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Is bespoke worth it?

Modular interior systems can be rearranged easily, and that flexibility is useful. A bespoke interior is planned around what you own. Off-the-shelf furniture tends to leave gaps at the ends of a wall and space above it, while fitted furniture fills the space. The pieces are made to the room’s own widths.

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Caring for painted furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed

If you have sliding doors, keep the bottom track clear of dust and fluff so the doors run smoothly. Clear anything that falls into it.

Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe aren’t blocked. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes.

Honest limits

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Building work to create a loft room
  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Questions from Putney Vale

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Putney Vale?

Yes, we work across Wandsworth, Putney Vale included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do you cover homes near Raynes Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Wandsworth and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The wardrobes are made at our workshop first before we come to fit them.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not usually. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Putney Vale

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Putney Vale were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 71%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 12%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The centre of Putney Vale is within about a quarter of a mile of the Kingston Vale Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Purpose-built flats are more common around Putney Vale than across Wandsworth: about 72% of households, against about 48%, according to Census 2021. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.

Southside House, about 1.5 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If your children go to Hall School Wimbledon or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If you live near Wimbledon Common, fitted wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.
