Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

With no grain to show through, MDF gives a calm painted finish. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted wardrobes.

Birch plywood

Shelves inside a wardrobe carry folded clothes, shoes and boxes. Birch plywood helps keep them straight, even across a wide section.

Fitted wardrobes in South Bermondsey

Wardrobes can be built around a bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. Others work around a window, with a dressing table or seat in between. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. If your home has not enough hanging space and musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall, fitted wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

With most households around South Bermondsey in purpose-built flats, mansion blocks and modern blocks are both possible. A mansion block bedroom may have a chimney breast, high ceilings and walls that aren’t straight, while a newer flat is more likely to have plasterboard walls. The fixings are chosen for whichever wall you have.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in South Bermondsey?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in South Bermondsey?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions. The slope is measured at the measuring visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.

How do I get started?

It is easiest to drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a written quote after the design visit.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing. We’ll help you weigh them up when we visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Many blocks have entry systems, concierge desks or rules on booking the lift, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Communal areas and floors are protected on the way in.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what you keep in your wardrobes now.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

Caring for painted furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting

Leave a little space between clothes and the back of the wardrobe. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.

Don’t dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut. A little ventilation in the room helps.
