Rotherhithe Fitted Wardrobes

  • A room too narrow for hinged doors

Fitted wardrobes for your home in Rotherhithe

Fitted wardrobes in Rotherhithe: what you get

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. Space that is hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about wasted space beside the chimney breast and an awkward slope in a loft bedroom.

Stud walls in newer homes can carry pipes and cables, so we check before fixing into them. Many homes around Rotherhithe date from 2000 onwards, so this check is routine. Heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Rotherhithe

My home in Rotherhithe is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Rotherhithe?

Yes, we work across Southwark, Rotherhithe included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What if my bedroom floor is not level?

Floors in older houses are often out of level. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the doors hang true.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we plan airflow behind and within it to help avoid condensation and mould.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes are cheaper to buy and easy to take with you. If you’re renting or moving soon, that may matter most. Fitted wardrobes stay with the room. In a newer flat, big flat-pack units can be hard to get into the lift or through the door, while fitted furniture comes in sections sized for the route. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It’s useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Rotherhithe

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Rotherhithe were built since 2000 (about 39%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 34%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 23 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Rotherhithe. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and fitted wardrobes can be designed to work around them. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Rotherhithe fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

Queen's House, about 2.1 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary Rotherhithe, about 0.5 miles west of the centre of Rotherhithe, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

What affects the price in Rotherhithe

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking and unloading on your street

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Getting in touch

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • How you want to use the space

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

What fitted wardrobes cannot fix

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Birch plywood

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so tell us what applies at the measuring visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. It starts when you tell us about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. We visit to measure the room and talk through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

Preparing the room

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Ask for a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Related advice

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

An tricky room is another reason. Slopes, chimney breasts, low windows and doors in awkward spots leave standard wardrobes with nowhere to go. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • Not enough hanging space

For families living near Alfred Salter Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.
