About our fitted wardrobes in Surrey Quays

In older bedrooms, the chimney breast alcoves are often the obvious place for clothes. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show, and each one is scribed to walls that are rarely straight. Picture rails and cornices can be met neatly or cut around. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are dusty space on top of the wardrobe and condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall.

A large share of the homes around Surrey Quays date from 2000 onwards, and a newer bedroom seldom comes with storage that fits how you live. Fitted wardrobes can be designed around the window, the radiator and the door swing. In a managed block, the lift and delivery rules are worth checking before fitting day.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors can be plain, panelled or shaped to suit the room. You choose a colour that matches or contrasts with the room.

Plinths and scribe strips

In period rooms, we typically scribe the sides and the top. It’s what gives a fitted wardrobe its built-in look.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in Surrey Quays

A move is a common trigger. Wardrobes from an old home rarely suit a new room, or may not make it up the stairs. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • No space in front for doors to swing
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe

For a flat near Surrey Quays station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. You tell us about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
  4. We then make the wardrobes in our workshop.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.

Preparing the room

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Questions from Surrey Quays

Is Surrey Quays in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes. Surrey Quays is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Southwark and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.

My home in Surrey Quays is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?

We plan it with you at the design visit, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?

The space in front of the wardrobe usually decides it. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense. We look at it with you when we measure.

Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers

Leave a little space between clothes and the back of the wardrobe. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.

Now and then, check that handles and hinges are tight.
