Fitted wardrobes in Walworth: what you get

Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, keeping long hanging where there’s height and drawers or shelves lower down. Space that is hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. If you’re living with condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Most homes around Walworth are purpose-built flats, whether in mansion blocks or newer developments. A mansion block bedroom may have a chimney breast, high ceilings and walls that aren’t straight, while modern flats tend to have plasterboard partitions. Either way, fitted wardrobes are fixed to suit the wall.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Walworth

Do you cover homes near Elephant & Castle station?

Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Walworth?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

How do I get started?

Just get in touch through our contact form. Rough measurements and a few pictures help, and we will arrange a design visit, followed by a written quote.

Will fitted wardrobes get up the stairs to my flat?

We make the wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. That’s why we measure the route, not just the room. In a leasehold flat, it is worth checking the lease first.

How long does it take to fit wardrobes?

The time on site depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Walworth homes and fitted wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Walworth were built since 2000 (about 33%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 27%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 43 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Walworth. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and fitted wardrobes can be designed to work around them. About 27% of homes in the area around Walworth were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Post-war bedrooms are normally simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick.

If you live in a period home close to Lady Margaret Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. The wider area includes historic houses like Mansion House, about 1.6 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. If you live in a flat close to Elephant & Castle station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Caring for painted furniture

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
  • List the things that won’t hang, such as jumpers and shoes
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations

New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. At first, handle the doors with care and don’t scrub the surfaces.

Now and then, check that handles and hinges are tight and adjust any door that starts to catch.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

The price for your room depends on:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Getting in touch

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • How you want to use the space
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

To make a start, get in touch through our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and a quote in writing follows.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the bedroom, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
  2. We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish, so you can see what’s included.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling.

Preparing the room

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

With hand painting, you see the colour in your own room’s light. Scribed edges and joins are painted along with the rest.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF has no grain, so painted doors look smooth and even. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice for fitted work.
