Fitted Wardrobes in Stepney
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted wardrobes for homes in Stepney, each designed at a visit to your home.
- Too little room for clothes
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
- Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
Fitted wardrobes designed for your room
Fitted wardrobes in Stepney
Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in the colour you choose. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are clothes with nowhere proper to go and condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall.
Wide windows with a radiator below are common in homes from the 1950s and 1960s, which leaves the other walls for storage. Many homes around Stepney were built in the post-war decades, so it’s a layout worth planning for. Nothing is built tight over the radiator, so it keeps heating the room.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

How fitting day works
You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Parking near post-war estates can depend on residents’ bays and estate rules, so let us know what applies at the design visit. Fitting day is the sections coming in, being joined and fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind.
- We visit to measure the room and discuss the design. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- You receive a quote in writing setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
- We fit them in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls.
Preparing the room
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
How to get a quote
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Pricing fitted wardrobes in Stepney
Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:
- How big the furniture is
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How square the room is
- Doors and drawers, and how many
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.
Helping us understand the room
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Your postcode and the borough
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.
Questions we’re often asked
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in Stepney?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?
That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, and in a roomier space hinged doors give easier access. We will look at the room with you during the design visit.
How do I get a quote?
The first step is to drop us a line using the contact form and let us know about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
Fitted wardrobes in Stepney: local notes
About 31% of the homes in the streets around Stepney went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 30% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 21 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Stepney. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Tower Hamlets included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Stepney is covered by it. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.
If you live in a flat close to Whitechapel station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your children go to Redlands Primary School or a school nearby, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If your home is one of the older houses near St Peter's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.
Stepney is about 1 mile west of Whitechapel, part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. We design and make fitted wardrobes for homes in Stepney and across Tower Hamlets. In Tower Hamlets, Stepney is one of the places we cover.
Here we cover the E1 and E2 postcode area for fitted wardrobes. You will find streets here such as Beaumont Square, Rectory Square and Carlton Square, and homes on each of them are within our area for fitted wardrobes. Stepney sits close to the A11 and B120. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Other places close to Stepney include East End of London (1 mile south-west), Ratcliff (1 mile south), Bethnal Green (1 mile north-west), Whitechapel (1 mile west) and Limehouse (1 mile east). We also make fitted wardrobes in nearby places like Old Ford (2 miles north-east), Poplar (2 miles south-east), London Docklands (2 miles south-east), Canary Wharf (2 miles south-east), Isle of Dogs (3 miles south-east) and Leamouth (3 miles east).
Local landmarks in Stepney
Around Stepney, we cover homes near Stepney Green Mathematics and Computing College, Black Horse Public House and Bishopsgate Institute Special Collections and Archives and the streets around them. There’s a railway station in Stepney itself: Whitechapel station. A little further out are Tower of London (1.4 miles south-west) and The Royal London Hospital (a few minutes’ walk west). Not far away are Lavender Pond and Tower Hill.
Why bespoke in Stepney?
To be fair, modular wardrobe systems are easy to reconfigure. A bespoke interior is planned around your clothes from the start. Skirting boards stop standalone furniture sitting flat against the wall, and that gap catches dust and wastes depth. Built-in pieces sit tight to the wall, scribed over the skirting.
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What it’s made from
Spray-painted finish
A sprayed coat covers edges, corners and panels evenly and leaves no brush marks. The colour is agreed at the design stage.
Birch plywood
Drawers get heavy use, so we often make the boxes from birch plywood, so they hold their shape.
Looking after your furniture
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Empty the area where we’ll be working
- List the things that will not hang, like jumpers and shoes
- Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
- Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Hinges can typically be adjusted to line the doors up again, and sliding doors can be reset on their track.
Let doors close gently rather than slamming. It keeps hinges and runners in adjustment longer.
