Stepney Wall Beds

In Stepney, we design wall beds around the room you actually have. We design your wall bed at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • More floor space in a studio flat
  • Storage built around a fold-down bed
  • A spare room that is rarely slept in

Wall beds in Stepney

Many spare rooms are only just big enough for a bed, and a bed that’s used a few times a year takes most of the floor. When the bed is folded away, the room is open again, ready for work, exercise or play. Guests still get a proper bed when they stay. Typical reasons to get in touch are a studio that works by day and night and shelves or a desk around the bed, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A good share of the homes around Stepney were built between 1945 and the early 1970s. Bedrooms from that era are often squarer than in older houses, which suits fitted furniture along a full wall. Some post-war homes have an original cupboard over the stairs that can be rebuilt as part of the design. Walls may be concrete, block or brick, so fixings are chosen for the wall.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

A sofa bed is cheaper and simpler, and for occasional guests that may be enough. With a wall bed you get a proper bed and an empty floor by day, which matters in a small room. Post-war rooms are often compact, and standard furniture sizes waste space at the ends and the top, while fitted furniture fills the space. Every width is made for the room.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Why us?

  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • We work across all London boroughs
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose

How fitting works for wall beds

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Stairwells in post-war blocks can have tight turns, so sections are sized for both the stairs and any lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know beforehand helps. Common parts are protected while we carry in.

  1. First, you let us know about the room and how you’d like it to work.
  2. We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the storage and the finish, for you to look over.
  4. The cabinets are made at our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Arranging a design visit

Tips worth knowing

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Lower and lift the bed steadily
  • Check there is room for the bed to fold down
  • Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
  • Check mattress size and weight limits

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch in if the cabinet gets a knock. Spray-painted finishes clean easily with a soft cloth and keep their smooth look.

Consider how often the bed will be used and by whom. That helps decide its size and the mechanism as well as the storage around it.

Is it time for wall beds?

A flexible room is useful as needs change. A playroom, a study or a hobby room can still have a bed for visitors when it’s needed.

People typically get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • A flexible room for a growing family
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day
  • A spare room that’s rarely slept in
  • A studio that works by day and night

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Stepney homes and wall beds

About 31% of the homes in the area around Stepney went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 30% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Stepney, 21 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 80% of households in the area around Stepney live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. For a flat, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If your children go to Redlands Primary School or a school nearby, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If you live in a flat close to Whitechapel station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Stepney is about 1 mile west of Whitechapel, within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Anywhere in Stepney, it works the same way: a design visit, a written quote, furniture built in our workshop and fitting in your home. Stepney is one of 31 places on our list for Tower Hamlets.

Postcode districts we cover here for wall beds: E1 and E2. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Beaumont Square, Rectory Square and Carlton Square, whether you want wall beds or another piece made for the room. How it’s made

Hand-painted finish

If you’d like the bed to match the skirting or doors, hand painting works well.

Bed mechanism housing

The housing has to be strong and square, so it’s built from sturdy board. It is fixed into a wall or floor that can take the load.

Questions we are often asked

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you make wall beds for homes in Stepney?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London, and Stepney is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Is a wall bed safe?

A wall bed is designed to be used regularly as long as they’re fixed and used as the maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and you should follow the maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We go through the mechanism’s limits when we measure, so you can pick the right one.
