Walk-in wardrobes for your home in Turnpike Lane

Walk-in wardrobes in Turnpike Lane: what you get

Many London homes have a small room that’s tricky as a bedroom. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, leaving the bedroom with more space. We plan the layout so you can stand, turn and see everything. We make walk-in wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a dressing table with drawers and a mirror and more space for clothes and shoes.

A large share of the homes around Turnpike Lane were built before 1919, and bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast with an alcove either side. Fitted storage can sit in the alcoves or span the wall, chimney breast and all. Because older floors slope and walls bow, everything is scribed and levelled on site.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Bedroom storage in Turnpike Lane

In the area around Turnpike Lane, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 66%) and the years since 2000 (about 15%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Turnpike Lane, Historic England’s list includes Church of St John the Baptist (greek Orthodox) (Grade II*), under half a mile south, and Tower of Old Parish Church of St Mary (Grade II*), less than half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 28% of households in the streets around Turnpike Lane, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St John The Baptist (greek Orthodox), a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. Bruce Castle, about 1.5 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If your children go to North Harringay Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

What it’s made from

Spray-painted finish

You choose the colour, and we apply it in the workshop.

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the character of a hand-painted finish in an older home.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You contact us about a walk-in wardrobe or dressing room.
  2. We visit to plan the room and measure the way in, including stairs, landings and doorways. It’s useful to mention parking then, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the units in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry the sections in, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before we arrive

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Arranging a design visit

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

How we price walk-in wardrobes

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Parking near your home
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Before the design visit

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit. To arrange the visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Looking after your furniture

Getting the most from walk-in wardrobes starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Measure how much long hanging you need
  • Plan lighting with your electrician
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Have a clear-out before we measure

We adjust doors and drawers as part of the fitting. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even.

Before the design visit, sort through your clothes. We plan the layout around your clothes, so it is worth having a sort-out first.

When is bespoke worth it?

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Questions from Turnpike Lane

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Turnpike Lane?

Yes. Turnpike Lane is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Haringey and London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details.

My home in Turnpike Lane is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on, so it is worth checking before fitting day.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
