Walk-in wardrobes in Aldwych, Westminster

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on walk-in wardrobes in Aldwych starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes
  • Shelves for shoes and bags
  • Room for two wardrobes in one space

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Aldwych

My home in Aldwych is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Aldwych?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Is it better to have doors or open storage?

It’s your choice. Doors give a tidy look and help keep dust away, while open rails and shelves let you see everything. Many people choose a mix.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Does a walk-in wardrobe need air flow?

Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, particularly against a cooler external wall. We allow for ventilation in the design.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Aldwych

A walk-in wardrobe can also be part of a bedroom. Where a bedroom is large enough, a section can be set aside with a partition or a run of units, with doors or left open. Any new partition wall is for your builder, while we make and fit the furniture. If your home has setting aside a corner of a large bedroom and room for a growing wardrobe, that is what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Around Aldwych, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Because older floors slope and walls bow, everything is scribed and levelled on site.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Before and after fitting day

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Keep the room ventilated
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Think about long versus double hanging
  • Know what you’ll keep before planning

Once the units are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Treat the doors and drawer fronts gently at first, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth.

Before the design visit, sort through your clothes. The amount of long hanging, double hanging, shelving and shoe storage depends on what you own, so a clear-out first gives a better design.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it is useful to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. We start with the room you have in mind and what needs a home. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and talk through hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the layout, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. We build the carcasses, drawers and shelves in our workshop.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Advice

Bedroom storage in Aldwych

In the neighbourhood around Aldwych, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 48%) and the years since 2000 (about 22%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Aldwych is partly covered by the Strand Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.

Dr Johnson's House, about 0.4 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. Living in a block of flats near London Charing Cross station? Then it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If your children go to St Clement Danes CofE Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

We cover places right across Westminster, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

What we do not do

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Lighting and wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Fixing the cause of damp

What affects the price in Aldwych

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Getting in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf wardrobe systems are quicker to get and typically cost less, and in a simple room they may suit. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely fit neatly. Ours is built to the room’s real shape. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
