How we make loft storage for Barnet
Getting furniture up to a loft room is part of the planning. We measure the route not just the room, so the sections we make in our workshop can be carried up. It’s a step that matters for any loft in Barnet. Typical reasons to get in touch are standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs and a loft room with too many jobs; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
In an older home, panelled doors and painted mouldings may suit; in a newer one, plain flat doors may fit better. For a home in Barnet, door styles are talked through at the measuring visit. You choose the colour, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Loft storage for homes in Barnet
About 27% of the homes in the streets around Barnet went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 26% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Barnet include Odeon Cinema (Grade II), under half a mile west, and Church of St Mark (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 26% of homes in the area around Barnet were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. In a post-war house with a converted loft, the space under the slopes is worth using; we build once the loft is converted or boarded.
For families living near Grasvenor Avenue Infant School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Close to Highlands Gardens? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. Living in a block of flats near New Barnet station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Barnet is about 3 miles south of Finchley, part of the London Borough of Barnet. Anywhere in Barnet, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. We cover places right across the rest of London.
Design visits and fitting in EN5, EN4, N20 and N11 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Streets in the area include Station Road, High Street and Sambroke Square, and we cover homes on all of them for loft storage. Barnet sits close to the B193 and A1081. We also cover Underhill (1 mile west), New Barnet (1 mile east), Monken Hadley (1 mile north-west), Hadley Wood (1 mile north-east) and Cockfosters (1 mile east). Other parts of the rest of London we cover include Finchley (3 miles south), Burnt Oak (4 miles south-west), East Finchley (4 miles south), Hendon (5 miles south), Whetstone (2 miles south-east) and Edgware (4 miles south-west).

Looking after your furniture
A little care keeps the finish looking good. These practical tips help:
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Check the route up to the loft
- Note the things that need a home in the loft
- Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
When we’ve finished fitting, the cupboards and drawers are ready. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.
Do not overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners. It helps to clear out now and then. Heavy boxes are best kept low.
What happens on fitting day
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.
- It starts when you get in touch about storage in your loft, whether it is a converted room or a boarded space.
- At the design visit, we look at the slopes, the eaves and the way up.
- Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. You can ask us about any of it.
- Your storage is made at our workshop, shaped to the loft, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill.
How to prepare
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
Starting with a design visit
A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, send us a few details through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Advice
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes often don’t fit up narrow loft stairs. We make each piece in sections that fit up the stairs. It means a full wardrobe can still reach the room. Off-the-shelf furniture is designed for no room in particular, whereas fitted pieces are designed for one room: yours. It can be painted in a colour chosen for that room.
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It is useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.
Why choose us

Your questions about loft storage in Barnet
Can you fit furniture in a home close to New Barnet station?
Yes. We cover the whole of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do you make loft storage for homes in Barnet?
Yes, Barnet is within the area we cover, which takes in all of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
How much does loft storage cost?
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. It depends on how much storage you want, the shape of the room and the finish. For a quote, use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
How long does it take to fit loft storage?
How long fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is built in our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Can you convert my loft as well?
No. We do not carry out loft conversions. We design and fit storage once the room is in place, from eaves cupboards to wardrobes under the slopes.

Boards, parts and paint
Plinths and scribe strips
The floor in a loft room is rarely perfectly level. We set the storage level on a plinth or adjustable feet, so everything opens and closes as it should.
Hand-painted finish
Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It’s done on site, in the colour you choose. It can be matched to the room’s woodwork.
