How we make fitted home offices for Herne Hill

The desk is the heart of a home office. It is made at a height and depth to suit you and the way you work, with storage below where it helps. Shelves and cupboards can be planned around it. The design visit in Herne Hill is where these choices are made. People usually come to us about a corner too odd for a standard desk and a guest room that’s needed for work, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In an older house, sockets may be few and in tricky places, so we plan cable routes to the sockets you have. If you need more, that is a job for your electrician before the furniture goes in. With a large share of the homes around Herne Hill built before 1919, it’s worth thinking about early.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Herne Hill homes and fitted home offices

Homes built before 1919 make up about 59% of the housing in the area around Herne Hill, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Herne Hill include Church of St Paul (Grade II*), less than half a mile west, and Half Moon Public House (Grade II*), under half a mile south-west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Herne Hill is covered by it. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

Living in a block of flats near North Dulwich station? Then it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For a family home near Judith Kerr Primary School, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Herne Hill

My home in Herne Hill is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Herne Hill?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Is an alcove big enough for a desk?

It depends on the width and depth of the alcove. Plenty of alcoves suit a small desk, with shelves and storage around it. We will tell you honestly when we visit.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Tips worth knowing

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Look at the window and where the light falls
  • Tell us about every device that needs a home
  • Think about what you’d like on show
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls

If you’re having new sockets fitted, your electrician can do that around the furniture as planned. It helps if they know where the cable routes are. Tidy cables keep the office looking calm.

Use a mat or coasters on the desk for hot drinks. Mop up spills quickly. A mat protects the area you use most.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

From workshop to your room

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space you want to work in.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan a desk and storage that follow the shape of the room.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the office in your home, trimming the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. Your spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the office.

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Advice

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. It can be matched to the room’s woodwork.

Pull-out drawers

Desk drawers keep the things you use every day close by. A deep drawer can hold hanging files. We size each drawer to suit.

Is it time for fitted home offices?

A spare room that has to do two jobs is another reason. A built-in desk and storage can leave space for a bed. It makes the most of a room that’s only sometimes used for guests.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
  • A corner too odd for a standard desk
  • Working at the kitchen table
  • A tangle of chargers and leads

The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 1.7 miles south. If your own home is a period one, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
