Fitted home offices in Crofton Park, Lewisham

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted home offices in Crofton Park starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Cables trailing across the desk and floor
  • Work things on show in the evening
  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go

What fitted home offices can’t fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Turning an unconverted loft into a room
  • New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

About our fitted home offices in Crofton Park

An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a neat desk with shelves above. We scribe the desk and shelving to the alcove walls, which are rarely straight. The opposite alcove can carry shelves or a cupboard to match. It gives a home in Crofton Park a workspace that looks part of the room. Most enquiries start with working at the kitchen table and paperwork and files with nowhere to go; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Around Crofton Park, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and Victorian and Edwardian rooms normally have a chimney breast with an alcove each side. A desk can sit in an alcove, with shelving above and a cupboard below, which keeps work in its own corner of the room. The pieces are scribed to walls that wander and levelled on floors that slope.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

What happens on fitting day

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the desk, shelves and storage, and look at where the light falls. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
  3. You receive a written quote for the office.
  4. We make the desk and storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable holes and routes built in.
  5. The desk and shelves are fitted, with the cable routes ready for your equipment.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

How to get a quote

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Crofton Park

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Crofton Park?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Crofton Park?

Yes, we work across Lewisham, Crofton Park included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you build a home office in an alcove?

It depends on the width and depth of the alcove. Plenty of alcoves suit a small desk, with shelving above and drawers below. We measure and give an honest view during the design visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

What are your built-in desks made from?

The office is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The desk, shelves and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Practical tips

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Think about what you’d like on show
  • Choose a calm colour for a working room
  • Look at the window and where the light falls

A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It is worth keeping a record of the paint colour. Should you have a question about the office, drop us a line using the contact form and we will help.

Use the cable routes so wires do not rub the paint. Wires pulled across an edge can wear it. A little tidying now and then keeps the office calm.

Built-in desks and shelving in Crofton Park

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Crofton Park were built before 1919 (about 57%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 12%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List records 11 entries within half a mile of the centre of Crofton Park. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Lewisham is inside it. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Crofton Park, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.

For a family home near Stillness Infant School, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side. The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 2.4 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. For an older house near Church of St Hilda, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.
