About our fitted home offices in Fulham

An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a neat desk with shelves above. The desk and shelves are scribed to the alcove, as period walls are seldom flat. The opposite alcove can carry shelves or a cupboard to match. It gives a home in Fulham a workspace that looks part of the room. People normally come to us about paperwork and files with nowhere to go and shelves that sag under books and files; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A desk has to be level even when the floor isn’t, and in a house from before 1919 that means levelling and scribing at the base. A large share of the homes around Fulham were built before 1919, so it’s something we plan for from the start. Shelves above are scribed to the wall so the gaps stay even.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Fulham homes and fitted home offices

About 67% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Fulham went up before 1919, and about 13% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Fulham is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Fulham is covered by it. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.

If your children go to St Johns Walham Green Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, a desk with shelves and closed storage can serve both work and homework. The wider area includes historic houses like Fulham Palace, about 0.7 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

Fulham is in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Whether your home in Fulham is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. In Hammersmith and Fulham, Fulham is one of the places we cover.

Practical tips

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Estimate the shelf space you will need
  • Think about where the sockets are now
  • Consider doors to hide work at the end of the day
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls

Before we leave, we check every drawer, door and shelf with you. We’ll show you the cable routes and how they’re meant to be used. You’ll be ready to set up your desk.

Keep the chair from knocking the desk edge. Pushing it in gently helps. Small chips on a hand-painted finish are easy to touch in.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. It is applied in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.

Pull-out drawers

We make the drawer boxes from birch plywood for strength. They carry papers, files and equipment. The fronts are painted to match.

Questions from Fulham

Does a conservation area in or near Fulham affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Fulham?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can a home office go in a loft room?

Yes, in a converted loft room. We plan around the headroom, so the desk sits where you can stand up. Shelving and cupboards can fill the lower space under the slope.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

How is a home office priced?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A simple desk with shelves involves less work than a full wall of cupboards and drawers. We set it all out in a written quote.

Where other trades come in

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Changes to the structure of the house
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Cable routes
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Filing drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Built-in desks

What happens on fitting day

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the desk and storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable holes and routes built in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed and set level, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Arranging a design visit

You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, message us from the contact page and tell us about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

The problems fitted home offices solve

The most common reason is working from home. A kitchen table or a corner of the bedroom soon stops working. A fitted home office gives work a proper place.

Here’s what fitted home offices can help with:

  • A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room
  • An alcove or landing that could take a desk
  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
  • Glare from a window on the screen

If you live in a flat close to West Brompton station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What to check before you book

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
