Loft storage in Fulham
Loft stairs are often narrow and steep, with tight turns. At the design visit, we measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft, so the sections we make in our workshop can be carried up. It is part of the job for any loft room in Fulham. If you are living with standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs and a loft room that still feels unfinished, eaves cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Fulham, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How fitting works for loft storage
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You let us know about the loft room.
- We come to measure and talk through the design and finish.
- A written quote follows.
- We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in the loft and check each door and drawer with you.
- Go easy on new paintwork while it cures; hand-painted surfaces are easy to touch up later.
Before we arrive
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Questions from Fulham
Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Fulham?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Fulham?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Is the furniture made to order?
We make it in our workshop. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
What happens when you come to measure?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Fulham homes and loft storage
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Fulham were built before 1919 (about 67%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 13%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Fulham, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Thomas of Canterbury (Grade II*), less than half a mile north, and Vine Cottages (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Purpose-built flats are home to about 44% of households in the area around Fulham, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
Fulham Palace, about 0.7 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk. If you live in a flat close to West Brompton station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For a family home near St Johns Walham Green Church of England Primary School, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
For simple storage in a boarded loft, ready-made shelving can do the job. Bespoke work makes sense in a converted loft room, where the storage is part of the room. We’ll give you an honest view during the design visit. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Looking after your furniture
These points come up often when people plan loft storage. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
- Note the things that need a home in the loft
- Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall
Don’t pack things so tightly that air cannot move behind the knee wall. The storage is planned to keep airflow, so leave that space open. It helps prevent damp behind the storage.
Loft rooms can be warm in summer and cool in winter. Keep the room ventilated. It helps the storage stay in good condition.
What it costs
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- The number of doors and drawers
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
What to send when you get in touch
To help us picture the room, please include:
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Where you live, with the postcode
