Hornsey Fitted Home Offices

Planning fitted home offices for a home in Hornsey? We start with a design visit and a written quote.

  • An tricky space with no furniture that fits
  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
  • A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room

Fitted home offices designed for your room

Honest limits

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Structural work, like removing walls or chimney breasts
  • Building a loft conversion, which is not our work
  • Painting the walls and ceiling

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Cable routes
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Built-in desks
  • Birch plywood
  • Filing drawers

How we make fitted home offices for Hornsey

Light matters in a home office. A screen facing a window can be hard to read, and a window behind you can cause glare. We plan the desk position with the window in mind, often with the light to one side. We look at it early at the design visit in Hornsey. If your home has a screen that’s hard to read by the window and a tangle of chargers and leads, home offices made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

A large share of the homes around Hornsey were built before 1919, and houses of that age often have alcoves either side of a chimney breast. A desk can sit in an alcove, with shelving above and a cupboard below, which keeps work in its own corner of the room. The pieces are scribed to walls that wander and levelled on floors that slope.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A fitted office can combine a desk, shelving and cupboards in one design. Ready-made pieces bought separately rarely line up. A single design gives the room clean, consistent lines. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so off-the-shelf pieces either do not fit or leave a gap either side. Furniture made for the space fills it.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Is it time for fitted home offices?

Many spare rooms need to work as an office and a guest room. A built-in desk and storage can leave space for a bed. It makes the most of a room that is only sometimes used for guests.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Files and folders piling up
  • A desk in the wrong light
  • A room with two jobs to do
  • Flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight

For a family home near St Mary's CofE Primary School, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so home offices are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You contact us about a home office in a spare room, alcove, landing or under the eaves.
  2. We visit to measure the space, including any slope, alcove or uneven wall.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the office in your home, trimming the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. Your spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the office.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

Hornsey homes and fitted home offices

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hornsey were built before 1919 (about 63%) and since 2000 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hornsey include Tower of Old Parish Church of St Mary (Grade II*), less than half a mile east, and Church of St John the Baptist (greek Orthodox) (Grade II*), less than half a mile east. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. Where a home in Hornsey is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

Close to Priory Park? A desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day. For an older house near Church of Holy Innocents, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

Practical tips

Getting the most from fitted home offices starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Note how many files and books you need to store
  • Think about where the sockets are now
  • Notice where daylight falls at different times

Any sockets or wiring are for your electrician, and the furniture leaves room for them. Show them the cable routes so everything lines up. Tidy cables keep the office looking calm.

Use the cable routes so wires don’t rub the paint. Tight cables can mark edges over time. A little tidying now and then keeps the office calm.

Questions we are often asked

My home in Hornsey is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Home offices are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

My house in Hornsey is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can a desk be fitted into an alcove?

In many homes, yes. An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a desk with shelves above. It is scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. At the design visit we will measure and tell you what fits.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do you wire in sockets for the home office?

Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, not us. The desk is planned with routes for cables and space for any sockets. It helps to agree the positions at the measuring visit.

How is a home office priced?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A simple desk with shelves involves less work than a full wall of cupboards and drawers. Everything is set out in a quote in writing after the visit.
