How we make bespoke kitchens for London Fields

A kitchen needs other trades as well as a carpenter. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and electrics by your electrician, and we plan the cabinets around where their work goes. Most enquiries start with making the most of a galley kitchen and a dresser that suits a period house; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Most households around London Fields live in purpose-built flats, and in a flat, the kitchen is often small or open to the living space. Cabinets made to the room’s exact widths make the most of every wall. Each cabinet is made in sections sized for the stairs, lift and doors.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

What it costs

The price for your room depends on:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Helping us understand the room

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • How you want to use the space
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Pick the oven, fridge and dishwasher first
  • Share the layout with your other trades
  • Think about how you cook and what you store
  • Measure the route into the kitchen

Let steam escape when you cook, as steam settling on cabinets over time isn’t good for any finish. Ventilation helps the whole kitchen.

Choose your appliances before the design is finalised. Their sizes shape the cabinets, and changing them later can mean changing the units.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in London Fields

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in London Fields?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

I live near London Fields station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hackney and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Do you handle the gas and electrics for the kitchen?

No. We make and fit the kitchen cabinets. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by a Gas Safe registered engineer and electrics by your electrician, and we design around where their work goes.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What materials do you use for kitchens?

Our kitchens are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Kitchens in London Fields: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around London Fields were built before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of London Fields, 22 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. Vans bringing furniture to London Fields fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access during the design visit.

For a family home near Gayhurst Community School, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off. Near listed buildings like The New Lansdowne Club, under half a mile east of the centre of London Fields, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

Often the call comes after building work has opened up the space. A new room needs a kitchen planned for its shape and light, and building work itself is for your builder.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • A dresser that suits a period house
  • A kitchen finished in your colours
  • A kitchen that fits an uneven room
  • Extra cupboard space

Close to Haggerston Park? A tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design.

What to check before you book

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

How to choose a carpenter in London

Flats, leases and landlords

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Sections come into the flat in the order they’re fitted, so the flat doesn’t fill up. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.

  1. You let us know about the room and how you use it.
  2. We visit to measure and go through the design and storage. We note where the water, gas and sockets are now.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe engineer handle the services.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Ask for a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.
