London Fields TV and Media Units

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on TV and media units in London Fields starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV
  • Nowhere good for speakers

Caring for painted furniture

People planning TV and media units often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
  • Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished
  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow

Cupboard doors may settle slightly with use. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line.

Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit.

About our TV and media units in London Fields

Cables are the part most people want to hide. Cable routes are built into the design from the start, with holes, channels and access panels so leads can be added or changed later. The routes are ours, while any wiring is for your electrician. If you’re living with a tangle of wires behind the TV and equipment with nowhere proper to go, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A flat’s living room often has to hold the sofa, the TV, the books and the dining table. Around London Fields, where most households live in purpose-built flats, TV and media units that use the height of the room help keep the floor clear. Shallow units on one wall can hold more than a standalone bookcase while using less space.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Many blocks have entry systems, concierge desks or rules on booking the lift, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Floors in the flat and the common parts are protected while the furniture comes in.

  1. You send us a few details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the unit, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

Preparing the room

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Starting with a design visit

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Questions from London Fields

I live near London Fields station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hackney and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.

Is parking a problem for fitting in London Fields?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?

Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go, rather than sealing it in a cupboard. Keep the vents clear once it’s in use.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?

Electrical work isn’t something we do. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician. We share the layout so the sockets line up with the design.

What if I buy a larger TV?

We can size the opening for the screen you might buy next. Tell us the size you have in mind so the space and cable routes suit it.

TV and media units in London Fields: local notes

In the streets around London Fields, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of London Fields, Historic England’s list includes The New Lansdowne Club (Grade II*), less than half a mile east, and Church of St Michael and All Angels (Grade II), less than half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Purpose-built flats are home to about 60% of households in the area around London Fields, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For a family home near Gayhurst Community School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. Close to Haggerston Park? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

What it is made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF has no grain to show through for a smooth finish. We use the moisture-resistant grade.

Doors and drawer fronts

Many remote controls need a clear view of the box, so we may leave those shelves open.

Do you need TV and media units in London Fields?

A new, larger TV often prompts it. The old stand looks too small, or the screen dominates the wall. Shelves and cupboards around the screen make it sit better in the room.

Here’s what TV and media units can help with:

  • Bought furniture that does not suit the room
  • A cabinet that traps heat
  • Cables trailing across the wall
  • A big screen that dominates the wall

Sutton House, about 0.7 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
