The Burroughs Fitted Home Offices

We make fitted home offices for homes in The Burroughs, designed around the room you have. Your home office is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

  • A corner too odd for a standard desk
  • No proper place to work from home
  • A desk buried under papers

Ask about fitted home offices in The Burroughs

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

About our fitted home offices in The Burroughs

A spare room often makes the best home office, especially if it still needs to work as a guest room. We can design desks, shelving and cupboards that leave room for a bed, or doors that close over the desk at the end of the day. We’ll look at how the room is used when we visit in The Burroughs. Most enquiries start with a laptop that moves from room to room and an awkward space with no furniture that fits, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Around The Burroughs, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a 1930s house, the small room over the stairs often becomes the study, and its raised bulkhead can be built over or around. Shelving, a desk and closed storage can all fit a room like that.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Common questions about fitted home offices

Is The Burroughs in the area you cover for fitted home offices?

Yes. The Burroughs is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details.

My home in The Burroughs is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Which materials go into your home offices?

Our home offices are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Shelves are made to suit the load they’ll carry. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Is an alcove big enough for a desk?

Often, yes. A desk with shelving over it can fit neatly in an alcove. We scribe it to the walls, which are rarely straight in a period room. We’ll check the size at the design visit.

Fitted home offices for homes in The Burroughs

About 45% of the homes in the streets around The Burroughs went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 20% before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The centre of The Burroughs is within about a quarter of a mile of the Hendon The Burroughs Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. More than a third of the homes in the area around The Burroughs (about 45%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The box room over the stairs in an interwar house is a classic home office, built around the bulkhead.

Near listed buildings like Church Farmhouse Museum, less than half a mile north of the centre of The Burroughs, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Heath Hall, about 2.6 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. If you live near Hendon Park, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

The Burroughs is within the London Borough of Barnet, about 2 miles east of Finchley. We can visit homes in The Burroughs on weekdays, or on a Saturday by arrangement. We list The Burroughs among 41 places we cover in Barnet.

How it is made

Pull-out drawers

Drawer boxes are made from birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well. They carry papers, files and equipment. The fronts are painted to match.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF cuts cleanly, which suits panelled doors and the angled parts of a desk under a slope. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. Most of what you see is MDF.

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the space.
  2. At the design visit we plan the office and measure the route in: stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We build the office in our workshop, in sections, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the room and fit them, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

What we do not do

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Changes to the structure of the house
  • Installing IT equipment or broadband
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator

Not sure whether your space suits fitted home offices? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we will tell you. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Filing drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Cable routes
  • Built-in desks

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:

  • Think about what you’d like on show
  • Estimate the shelf space you’ll need
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Think about the space you need to push back

Wiping the desk and fronts with a soft, damp cloth is usually all they need. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The front edge of the desk picks up marks first.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a door drops or a drawer catches, get in touch through our contact form and tell us.
