How we make fitted home offices for East End of London

In a period room, an alcove is often the right size for a compact desk. The desk and shelves are scribed to the alcove, as period walls are seldom flat. The opposite alcove can carry shelves or a cupboard to match. It gives a home in East End of London a workspace that looks part of the room. Most enquiries start with a desk in the wrong light and work things on show in the evening; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Many homes around East End of London have been built since 2000, and in newer homes, the second bedroom is often the office as well as the guest room. A desk with shelves and closed storage can share the room with a wall bed or a sofa bed. Stud walls need the right fixings for loaded shelves.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Built-in desks and shelving in East End of London

In the streets around East End of London, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 36%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 21%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of East End of London, 23 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Newer homes often have a compact second bedroom that doubles as an office.

For a flat near Shadwell station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St George in the East, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Mansion House, about 1.5 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window.

What affects the cost of fitted home offices

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Parking near your home

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Getting in touch

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

Before and after fitting day

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Check whether you’ll need new sockets
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Measure your chair and how much room you need behind it
  • Tell us about every device that needs a home

Before we leave, we check every drawer, door and shelf with you. We’ll show you the cable routes and how they’re meant to be used. That way, you can start work straight away.

A chair that bumps the desk can chip the paint. Ease the chair in rather than pushing it hard. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

Why bespoke in East End of London?

With ready-made furniture, the colour is the maker’s choice. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it sits with the rest of the room. Large standalone pieces don’t always fit the lift or the hallway, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections that fit. It’s then assembled and fixed in the room.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What you get with us

  • Saturday work by arrangement
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Read our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf and what a quote should include.

From workshop to your room

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Home offices are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.

  1. You tell us how you work and where you’d like the office, whether that’s a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
  2. At the design visit, the room is measured and the layout planned. Cable routes are planned at this point.
  3. We agree the desk, shelving and storage, and send a quote in writing.
  4. The office is made at our workshop and painted in your colour.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Your questions about fitted home offices in East End of London

Do you cover homes near Shadwell station?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in East End of London?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Can the spare room be an office and a guest room?

That depends on the space you have. An office on one wall often leaves room for a bed. At the design visit, we will suggest what works.
