About our fitted home offices in Poplar
Where the window sits affects how comfortable the desk will be. A screen facing a window can be hard to read, and a window behind you can cause glare. We will suggest where the desk should go to make the most of daylight without glare. We look at it early at the design visit in Poplar. Typical reasons to get in touch are a desk in the wrong light and shelves that sag under books and files; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Stud walls in newer homes can take shelves above a desk, as long as the fixings suit them. Since many of the homes around Poplar date from 2000 onwards, that’s something we check during the design visit. Heavier storage stands on the floor.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Materials and finishes
Shelves
Shelving over the desk keeps reference books close. Deeper shelves lower down can take a printer or files. The design visit is where depths are agreed.
Birch plywood
Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. We use it for desk tops, carcasses and drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.
What happens on fitting day
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer homes often have stud walls, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are covered while we work.
- First we hear about your work and the room you have in mind, whether that is a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
- We measure the room, look at the light and note the sockets.
- We agree the desk, shelving and storage, and send a quote in writing.
- Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
- We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.
Before fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Ask for a quote
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Advice
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bespoke furniture lets the desk, shelves and cupboards be planned together. Ready-made pieces bought separately rarely line up. The result is a calmer, more ordered room. In a newer flat, big flat-pack units can be hard to get into the lift or through the door, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections that fit. It is then assembled and fixed in the room.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Could you do it yourself?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Home working in Poplar: local notes
About 66% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Poplar went up since 2000, and about 16% between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Poplar, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Matthias (Grade II*), less than half a mile north, and New City College (Grade II), less than half a mile north. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in Poplar, let us know during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
For a flat near Canary Wharf station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If you live near Bartlett Park, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day. The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 1.9 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

Caring for painted furniture
Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:
- Check whether you will need new sockets
- Note how many files and books you need to store
- Note what sits on and around your desk
- Consider your chair when planning the desk
A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It’s worth keeping a record of the paint colour. Should you have a question about the office, send us a few details through our contact form and we will help.
Keep heavy loads on the shelves meant for them. We size shelves for what you told us they’d carry. Keep the weight spread along the shelf.
FAQs: fitted home offices in Poplar
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Canary Wharf station?
Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Poplar?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Is an alcove big enough for a desk?
Often, yes. A desk with shelving over it can fit neatly in an alcove. It’s scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. At the design visit we’ll measure and tell you what fits.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
It’s made in sections, sized for the route not just the room. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
