Loft storage in Barnehurst, Bexley

Planning loft storage for a home in Barnehurst? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing.

  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
  • Nowhere to store bags and boxes

Loft storage designed for your room

How we make loft storage for Barnehurst

Loft stairs are often narrow and steep, with tight turns. At the design visit, we measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft, so the sections we make in our workshop can be carried up. It’s a step that matters for any loft in Barnehurst. If your home has wasted space behind the knee walls and a loft room that still feels unfinished, eaves cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Around Barnehurst, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, and every piece is still scribed where it meets the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Honest limits

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician
  • Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
  • Loft conversions, which we don’t carry out

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Sloped wardrobe tops

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease.

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You tell us about your converted or boarded loft.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft, as everything has to get up there.
  3. We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a quote in writing.
  4. Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. It is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you.

How to prepare

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Ask for a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

Questions we are often asked

Is Barnehurst in the area you cover for loft storage?

Yes, Barnehurst is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bexley and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Do you cover homes near Barnehurst station?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

What do eaves cupboards cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. It depends on how much storage you want, the shape of the room and the finish. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How long is the fitting for eaves storage?

How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

How do you get large pieces into a loft?

Measuring the route is part of the design visit. Each section is made to fit the narrowest point, and then assembled in the loft.

What it costs

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • The internal fittings
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Before the design visit

These details help when you contact us:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Making use of awkward spaces in Barnehurst

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Barnehurst were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 40%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 31%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Barnehurst, Historic England’s list includes Parish Church of St Paulinus (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south-east, and One Bell Public House (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. More than a third of the homes in the area around Barnehurst (about 40%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Loft conversions are common in houses of that age, and the eaves can take fitted storage; we build the storage once the loft is converted or boarded.

If your children go to Mayplace Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. Living in a block of flats near Barnehurst station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Close to Braeburn Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.
