  • Nowhere to store bags and boxes
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • A loft room that still feels unfinished

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

About our loft storage in Rush Green

Loft stairs are often narrow and steep, with tight turns. At the design visit, we measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft, so every section made at our workshop fits up the stairs. It is a step that matters for any loft in Rush Green. Typical reasons to get in touch are boxes and suitcases with no home and needing storage in a loft office, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Rush Green, it’s worth looking up as well as down. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Questions we’re often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Rush Green?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do you make loft storage for homes in Rush Green?

Yes, Rush Green is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Havering and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?

A good design avoids that. At the design visit we check what’s there and leave the space it needs. Insulation and ventilation work itself is not ours.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Loft storage for homes in Rush Green

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 45% of the housing in the streets around Rush Green, with about 24% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Rush Green include Church of St Andrew (Grade II), about 0.6 miles north. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. We will plan where the van can stop.

If you live near Harrow Lodge Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. Hare Hall, about 2.1 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.

What prompts loft storage in Rush Green

A loft room used as an office or guest room often needs storage too. Storage in the eaves leaves the main floor clear.

People usually get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • A boarded loft with no proper shelving
  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
  • Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
  • Boxes and suitcases with no home

Living in a block of flats near Romford station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. First we hear about the loft room and what you’d like to store.
  2. At the design visit, the room and the route up are measured, as everything has to get up there.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows.
  4. Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the slopes and checked with you.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made furniture has to come up the loft stairs in one piece or flat-packed. We make each piece in sections that fit up the stairs. It means a full wardrobe can still reach the room. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
