New Eltham Loft Storage

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make loft storage for homes in New Eltham, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • Furniture that can’t get up to the loft

Loft storage in New Eltham: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 59% of the housing in the area around New Eltham, with about 22% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of New Eltham, Historic England’s list includes Southend House (Grade II), about 0.6 miles north-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. A van working in New Eltham will usually need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

For a family home near Wyborne Primary School, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. If you live in a period home close to All Saints Church, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.

Loft storage in New Eltham

A loft room can hold a great deal of storage, if the low spaces are used well. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, each shaped to the room. For a home in New Eltham, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. Typical reasons to get in touch are space under the eaves going to waste and furniture that can’t get up to the loft; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around New Eltham, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

What prompts loft storage in New Eltham

A boarded loft can be made far more useful with shelving. Storage in a boarded loft keeps everything organised. It suits seasonal things and boxes.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A loft room with too many jobs
  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
  • A new loft conversion that needs storage
  • Space under the eaves going to waste

If you live in a flat close to New Eltham station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job

Fitting day, step by step

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the loft room, whether it’s a converted room or a boarded space.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the slopes, the eaves and the way up, and discuss the design with you.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, cut to the slope, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill.

Preparing the room

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Tell us about parking near your home

Arranging a design visit

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, message us from the contact page and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Advice

Caring for painted furniture

People planning loft storage often ask about these. They help whatever the room:

  • Think about how you’ll reach into the eaves
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing
  • Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind

Heavy items are best kept in the lower parts of the storage. That keeps the drawers running smoothly. We size the shelves for what you said you’d keep there.

Loft rooms can be warm in summer and cool in winter. Keep the room ventilated. It helps the storage stay in good condition.

How it’s made

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done on site once the storage is in. It is easy to touch up if it gets marked. That helps in a well-used bedroom.

Pull-out drawers

Drawers that pull out make the eaves easy to use. You see everything at once. We plan them around any access the eaves need.

What affects the cost of loft storage

The price for your room depends on:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The overall size of the piece

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

What we need to know

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Common questions about loft storage

Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in New Eltham?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you make loft storage for homes in New Eltham?

Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London, and New Eltham is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?

Yes. A wardrobe made for the slope fits where a standard one can’t. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It is scribed to the slope and walls.

How long does it take to fit loft storage?

How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Every part is built in our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Does eaves storage affect the insulation?

Not when it’s planned well. At the design visit we check what’s there and leave the space it needs. Insulation and ventilation work itself is not ours.
