About our loft storage in Woolwich
Sloping ceilings make standard wardrobes hard to fit. A wardrobe made for the slope follows its angle, with hanging where there is height and shelves or drawers lower down. It uses the full height of the room. We will plan it during the design visit in Woolwich. Most enquiries start with wasted space behind the knee walls and needing storage in a loft office; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Around Woolwich, most households live in purpose-built flats, and blocks often have rules on lifts, deliveries and when work can happen. It’s useful to check them with the managing agent before fitting day. A lease can require consent for fixing to walls, so check yours first.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

How it is made
Doors and drawer fronts
The doors and drawer fronts are the face of the storage. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. Their tops follow the line of the slope.
Plinths and scribe strips
Loft rooms are seldom square. Scribe strips and a plinth take up the difference. That keeps the lines neat all round.
How fitting day works
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturday work is by arrangement where the building permits it.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A standalone wardrobe can go with you when you move. Fitted storage stays put, and it makes far more of the loft. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Whether the ceilings are tall or low, standard heights rarely match them, which wastes the space above. Fitted furniture runs to the ceiling.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Before and after fitting day
Looking after painted furniture is simple. These habits help most:
- Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer
- Count the clothes you’ll need to hang
Before we leave, we check every door and drawer with you. If there is an access door to the eaves, we make sure it opens fully. You’ll know it all works as it should.
Loft rooms can be warm in summer and cool in winter. Keep the room ventilated. That keeps the storage and the paint in good order.
Loft storage for homes in Woolwich
Homes built since 2000 make up about 31% of the housing in the area around Woolwich, with about 25% built between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 60 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Woolwich. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 61% of households around Woolwich live in purpose-built flats, well above the figure for Greenwich as a whole, about 43%, according to Census 2021. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.
Queen's House, about 2.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Woolwich Town Hall, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live near Woolwich Common, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Your questions about loft storage in Woolwich
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is Woolwich in the area you cover for loft storage?
Yes, we work across Greenwich, Woolwich included, and across the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?
Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It is cut to fit the ceiling and walls exactly.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
How do you get large pieces into a loft?
We make the storage in sections sized for the route. We measure the way up along with the room itself. That way, even a large wardrobe can reach the loft.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.
